Regulatory compliance: reformulating a fragrance without losing its identity

29.06.2026

In perfumery, the creative process does not end with the launch of a fragrance. Throughout its time on the market, a formula must evolve to remain compliant with European regulations and IFRA standards. This need for reformulation is an integral part of a perfumer’s job.

At Créassence, we support brands well beyond the initial creation, ensuring the regulatory compliance of their fragrances and adapting them where necessary. When an ingredient is banned, restricted or subject to new constraints, our job is to reformulate the composition with precision, without compromising its olfactory signature or causing confusion for the consumer.

Replacing a raw material is not simply a matter of removing it: it is essential to understand the role it played in the fragrance’s balance – sillage, longevity, olfactory facet – and then to recreate that effect. This involves adding new ingredients or redesigning the formula’s architecture, by adjusting the raw materials already present.

Certain recent regulatory changes, concerning for example Galaxolide, cyclamen aldehyde or heliotropine, perfectly illustrate this challenge. They are now pushing perfumers to explore new solutions, drawn in particular from biotechnology, green chemistry or new-generation raw materials.

At Créassence, we approach reformulation as a process requiring precision, expertise and fidelity: evolving a fragrance so that it remains true to itself, without ever losing its soul.
